The best power banks
Best Power banks are the means of choice to solve one of the biggest problems of the mobile age: the limited battery capacity of smartphones and tablets. In a handy format, they are very good for the daily train journey to work or as a huge energy storage for the long weekend in nature. External power banks are thus the mobile emergency socket for refuelling the sloppy battery.
The market for power banks has grown enormously. Many manufacturers offer power banks in many different sizes: from a modest 3,000 to a proud 30,000 milliampere hours (mAh) and more. The dimensions and weight of the equipment naturally increase with the capacity – and usually also the price.
We have tested a total of 97 spare batteries for you, 60 of the mobile energy storage systems are currently available.
For a better experience, we divided the tested power banks into three groups according to their capacity: small power banks with less than 10,000 mAh (milliampere hours), medium power banks from 10,000 to 20,000 mAh and large ones with 20,000 mAh or more. For each of the three sizes we have chosen a test winner and alternative recommendations
What is a power bank?
A power bank is nothing more than a battery. This allows you to easily recharge electronic devices such as smartphones on the go.
What capacity should a power bank have?
This depends on the planned usage scenario. However, one can orientate oneself on the acastability of current smartphones, which is usually between 3,000 and 4,500 mAh. A 10,000 mAh power bank is sufficient for 2-3 full charges.
Are power banks dangerous?
Intact power banks can be used without hesitation and even one or the other scratches on the surface is not tragic. However, if the USB port, or even the cells inside the power bank, is damaged, there may be strong heat generation during the charging or discharging process. Such defective devices should not be used under any circumstances, because in the worst case this can cause the power bank to catch fire.
Do power banks charge at different speed?
Yes. The trend towards fast charging has also prevailed among the power banks, and so there are now many power banks on the market that support Quick Charge and Power Delivery.

How we tested
For the classification into the three size classes, we refer to the manufacturer’s data, even if some of them differ considerably from the actual capacities measured.
With the help of a USB power meter, we have determined the actual capacity of the power banks. As in almost any modern device with a battery, even in power banks, electronics prevent the battery from being completely discharged. A certain amount of energy is always stored, otherwise the battery will be damaged.
Since you can’t rely on the manufacturer’s capacity information, we measured all power banks. To do this, we charged each power bank and then discharged it until it stopped supplying power. This allowed us to determine the actual capacity of the power banks.
We made the measurements with the help of a USB multimeter.
In addition to measuring the actual amount of energy emitting the battery packs, the charging time was also of interest. To do this, we charged each model with a 2-ampere charger and measured the charging time.
Catlyn power bank
However, what it looks like in practice at home always depends heavily on the power supply used. Because many smartphone chargers only supply 1 ampere and also many PC USB sockets do not produce 3 amperes. You can find out the current of a charger on the device, usually in very small print.
The best small power banks
Small power banks are popular because they are narrow and compact and you can always have them with you. And for charging the mobile phone once or twice, their capacity is always sufficient.
By small power banks we mean devices from 5,000 to 10,000 mAh. From our point of view, under 5,000 mAh are not recommended.

Had an Aukey for years with great results until I dropped it. This one looks to be as good. Only thing to be aware of is it is longer and wider than the old one. Thinner than the old one. Will be challenging to fit in some pockets. The addition of USB-C is a big plus.
Aukey Usb C Power Bank
Fantastic battery pack. This is not a pocket-sized device but is great to carry in a backpack or other bag. It will recharge devices several times, from empty, on a single charge, and you can charge multiple devices simultaneously. I’m really happy with it.

2. Samsung Portable Wireless Charger Battery
Qi wireless charger and portable battery combined 10,000 mAh battery capacity with included USB-C cable Wireless Charger Portable Battery The truly wireless life On-the-go power meets wireless charging. The Wireless Charger Portable Battery fills all your mobile power needs. Conveniently charge your smartphone on the wireless charger when it is plugged in, and also take the charger with you as a 10,000 mAh portable battery pack.
I purchased this to bring to my second home and also when travelling. It’s lightweight and offers versatility to charge via USB or wirelessly for compatible devices. It recharges quickly after use, too.
So far, I’ve had 2 long power outages in 2 months, so I have had the need to charge phones. It easily charges wirelessly 1 device and can also charge another via USB at the same time. Working remotely, it helped save me from having to take time off during weather events. My work phone gets a lot of use and the Samsung charger kept the phone charged.
Samsung Portable Wireless Charger Battery
The main reason I purchased this is also what I like the most after using it: the convenience of wirelessly charging. Besides not needing a cable at all, I don’t have to worry about having the right cable, too. My work phone uses a different cable from my personal phone. As a result, I don’t have to have both cables like with my previous portable battery. I also appreciate it charging through cases. I have a few Qi chargers around the house including some Samsung-branded ones, and they all charge with my cases still on. The portable charger works like a champ the same way.
Overall, I’m happy with the portable charger and have had no problems.

3. Goal Zero Flip 12
Stylish and strong – the Flip 12 is ideal for keeping phones and small devices charged up and ready to go.
I have taken this on three or four back country trips. It has not let me down. It fully charges my iphone 7s once, as advertised. This replaced a unit I got on amazon that failed in the backcountry on it’s maiden voyage (or was it the second voyage). Anyway there are some no too good ones out there.
- I saw the photo, the battery and the charger.
- I place the order, surprise no charger.
- I went to the store to find out , battery’s not included.
- I said ok I am going to buy the charger separately, other surprise not available.
- There is something wrong with the marketing of that product.
- They gave me a credit.

What is the best portable power bank?
Some of the best portable power banks that we recommend are:
- RAVPower External Battery Pack
- Anker PowerCore 13000
- Anker PowerCore+ Mini, 3350 mAh Lipstick-Sized Portable Charger
- Qi Solar Power Bank
- Aibocn Power Bank 10,000mAh
Is 20000mAh good for a portable charger?
20,000mAh is a fairly common capacity for many portable chargers, which equates to around 6 full charges of an iPhone 7
How many mAh is good for a portable charger?
Think about what devices you need a power bank for and how long you’ll be away from a power outlet. If you just need something to keep your phone topped up a couple of times a day, a 5,000mAh or 10,000mAh will do the job just fine and it will be physically smaller too.
The little one-off of battery physics
Determining the capacity of a battery is not so easy in practice. For example, it depends on the ambient temperature – in cold weather, a battery delivers significantly less power than at room temperature. We are all aware of the problem that batteries are constantly losing capacity with their lifetime. And power is also lost during charging and unloading itself, as the quality of the USB cables plays a major role. So the amount of energy that gets into a battery is never the same one that comes out again.
Many manufacturers take advantage of such uncertainties and sometimes overstate their information about the capacity of their battery packs – according to the motto: No one can check exactly anyway. Especially with no-name manufacturers from the Far East, one can be far from sure that there is what is written on it.
It has become natural to specify the capacity of batteries in milliampere hours. This is actually a unit that says little about the actual capacity of a battery.
Much more meaningful than the milliampere hour (mAh) is the unit (milli-) watt hour (mWh or Wh), which stands for the electrical work and thus for the amount of energy that a battery can emit. In addition to the current in Ampere, the electrical voltage flows into volts, with which the power bank battery is discharged. The voltage affects the usable capacity or amount of energy that a smartphone can actually pull from a battery pack.
Small calculation example: An additional battery with 10,000 mAh performs exactly the same electrical work at 3.7 volts as a 1,000 mAh battery at 37 volts – namely 37 Wh. The indication of the milliampere hour alone therefore says little, decisive is the watt age. However, 10,000 mAh undoubtedly sound more impressive than 37 Wh, which is why the manufacturers probably prefer their specification. After all, the suppliers of almost all battery packs tested by us now indicate the capacity in milliampere hours (mAh) as well as in watt-hours (Wh) or milliwatt hours (mWh).
While looking for a good PowerBank, I came across this great test article here. The review is great and very informative. I chose the Anker PowerCore +.
Unfortunately, I think there was an error in the review here. The Anker PowerCore + is described here with a capacity of 26800mAh and a USB-C connection.
When you click on the Amazon link, you come to an Anker PowerCore + PowerBank without a USB-C connection. The images used here also do not match the article described.
If you look for the Anker PowerCore + with USB-C on Amazon, you come across a PowerBank with a USB-C connection. This power bank then has “only” 20100mAh and is also more expensive. That would possibly also explain the big difference between the manufacturer’s information and the actually measured capacity. I cannot imagine that a well-known manufacturer like Anker would advertise a power bank with 26800mAh but actually only deliver 15332mAh. It is much more likely that the power bank is touted with 20100mAh and actually only delivers 15332mAh.
So I think that two anchor power banks were mixed up in the test report.
